Finding the right home care company for you or your loved one

A Better Day is… knowing Mum or Dad are well cared for and cherished

Many people who ring us at Cherish Care are just starting on a journey of requiring care, which typically starts with care in your own home. Finding the right home care company to look after your loved one or even for yourself can be a daunting task, especially if it needs to be sorted quickly. Just finding the right company to ring in the first place can be a minefield but there are a few good ways of getting a list of potential candidates together.

A good start is the industry regulator, the Care Quality Commission’s website, as they have a search option for your area. This means you can get together a list of local companies and also look at their latest inspection rating to get an idea about how they are doing on quality care. There are also other websites popping up who are offering search facilities for finding the care companies to contact, such as homecare.co.uk.

Of course local knowledge is often the most reliable so if you can get a word of mouth referral this should be worth looking into. Have a chat with people in your local networks; someone may know a local gem of a company that would suit your family well. Another option is the local charities that may be able to help. If you are looking for care for someone with a specific condition, such as dementia, a dementia charity like Know Dementia will have good local knowledge and will be able to signpost you in the right direction.

Once you have a few people to ring, knowing the right questions to ask is so important to feeling comfortable with the company you choose. Be sure to carefully consider what is important to you and then ask questions to ensure the company can live up to your expectations. Being clear at the start what support you need and importantly how you want it done will mean you aren’t left feeling disappointed later on. For example, if having someone arrive at the same time every day is important to you, be sure this is something the company is able to live up to.

There is also the opportunity to look at each company’s website to get a feel for how they operate. They may have information on their values and approaches. I mention this of course as this is the inaugural blog for our new website, which I hope you will take time to have a look around.
